How Submo cancels HBO Max for you
- 1
Tell us who to cancel
Your name, address and the email on the account. That is everything we need — we never ask for your password and never sign in as you.

We prepare the notice
Submo composes a formal cancellation notice addressed to the provider's record, citing the account details you gave and requesting written confirmation.
- 3
We send it and tell you
The notice goes out on your behalf. You get a timestamped copy by email, so you have a paper trail if a charge shows up afterwards.

Why a written notice beats clicking cancel
A written record, timestamped
You get a dated copy of exactly what was sent and when. If the provider bills you after that date, that copy is what your bank wants to see.
No call, no retention script
You never speak to anyone. A written notice skips the save offers, the hold music and the chat agent whose job is to talk you out of it.
A data-deletion request included
Every notice also asks the provider to delete the personal data it holds on you, under CCPA or GDPR depending on where you live. They are obliged to answer it.
Our fee back if we don't send it
If Submo fails to send your notice, we refund our fee in full. We can't promise what the provider will do — nobody can — only what we do.
Before you cancel HBO Max
Five minutes here saves the two things people lose most often when they cancel: a period they'd already paid for, and something they can't get back afterwards.
- 1Confirm the biller. This service is very commonly billed through Amazon Channels, Roku, Apple, Google, or a cable provider, and each of those has to be cancelled where it's billed.
- 2Check whether you're on a promotional or bundled rate that ends soon — the price you're cancelling may not be the price you'd pay next month.
- 3Note the renewal date; there's no proration, so cancelling early in a period gives up the rest of it.
Does a HBO Max cancellation notice actually do anything?
It does one specific thing, and it is worth being precise about what. Giving written notice of cancellation is the act that ends the auto-renewal obligation, and a dated notice fixes when you gave it. Clicking a cancel button also ends the obligation — but it leaves you with a confirmation email at best and nothing at worst.
That difference is invisible until it matters. If HBO Max bills you after the effective date, the question your bank asks is when you cancelled and what proof you have. A dated notice answers both in one document. This is also why it works when you can't sign in: the notice doesn't depend on reaching a button inside the account.
What it does not do is compel HBO Max to act. No letter can. Anyone selling you one that does is selling you something that doesn't exist.
Can I get a refund from HBO Max?
Two different questions get mixed up here. The first — money back for a period you paid for and won't finish — is entirely HBO Max's decision under its own refund policy, summarised in the self-serve section below. You can ask for it on the form above and the request goes into the notice, but it remains a request.
The second is a charge taken after your cancellation was effective. That isn't discretionary and isn't really a refund: it's a disputed charge, and your card issuer can reverse it. The dated notice is the evidence that supports the dispute, which is the main practical reason to send one at all.
How to stop HBO Max auto-renewal
The subscription renews on its own cadence until cancelled. Annual plans renew into another full year, so the window before the annual date is the one that matters.
The notice we send asks explicitly for auto-renewal to be disabled and for any stored payment method to be removed, rather than only for the subscription to end. Those are separate things at most providers, and leaving the card on file is how a lapsed account quietly restarts.
What happens to your HBO Max data
Profiles and watch history are retained so a return restores them, and the account persists after the subscription lapses.
Every notice we send also carries a data-deletion request — under the CCPA if you're in the US, or the GDPR if you're in the EU or UK. Both give you a right to ask and oblige the provider to respond, though both also allow retention for specific purposes such as tax records. So it is a right to an answer, not a guarantee of erasure, and the notice asks HBO Max to say which exemption it relies on if it keeps anything.
Can't cancel HBO Max? The usual reasons
“I cancelled on the website and I'm still being billed”
A subscription bought through Amazon, Roku, Apple or a cable provider is not visible to, or cancellable by, the streaming service itself. Find the receipt and cancel with whoever sent it.
“The app won't let me cancel”
In-app cancellation is often absent where a store handles billing. Use the store's own subscriptions screen instead.
What happens after you cancel HBO Max
- 1Access continues to the end of the current billing period.
- 2Downloads become unplayable when the subscription lapses.
- 3The account and its profiles remain for a future restart.
Cheaper than cancelling HBO Max
If the reason is the price rather than the service, there is usually a smaller number available before you give it up entirely.
- The ad-supported tier is significantly cheaper for the same catalogue.
- An annual plan is cheaper than twelve monthly payments if you'll keep it a full year.
- Bundles through a mobile or broadband provider can be cheaper than subscribing directly.
The hands-on route
What cancelling HBO Max yourself involves
About 3 minutes — if you have your login, know who actually bills you, and don't get caught by a save offer on the way out. Steps verified August 2026. If you'd rather not deal with any of it, start the form and we'll send the notice for you.
Cancel it, step by step
Start with who takes the money. That decides everything else. Not sure which is yours? Check who the charge is from on your card statement or receipt: “APPLE.COM/BILL” means Apple, “GOOGLE *” means Google Play.
You subscribed on the HBO Max website and pay them directly.
- 1Sign in on the HBO Max website in a browser and open your profile menu.
- 2Choose Subscription (under Settings on some accounts).
- 3Select Manage Subscription, then Cancel Subscription.
- 4Confirm, and note the date access ends.
You started HBO Max inside an iPhone or iPad app, or your receipts come from Apple.
- 1Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap your name at the top.
- 2Tap Subscriptions.
- 3Tap HBO Max in the list of active subscriptions.
- 4Tap Cancel Subscription, then confirm.
- 5Check that the entry now reads “Expires” rather than “Renews”. That’s your confirmation.
You started HBO Max in an Android app, or your receipts come from Google Play.
- 1Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon.
- 2Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- 3Select HBO Max.
- 4Tap Cancel subscription and pick a reason to confirm.
- 5The entry should now show an end date instead of a renewal date.

- 1Sign in to Amazon and open Account & Lists.
- 2Choose Memberships & Subscriptions, then Prime Video Channels.
- 3Find HBO Max and select Cancel Channel.
- 4Confirm. The channel stays watchable until the paid period ends.

- 1From the Roku home screen, highlight the channel tile, but don’t open it.
- 2Press the ★ (Star) button on the remote to open Options.

- 4Confirm. HBO Max keeps working until the current period ends.

What trips people up
The steps are the easy part. These are the things that leave people still paying a month later.
Cable and telco subscriptions cancel at the provider
If HBO Max arrived through a TV package or a mobile plan, that provider owns the billing. The HBO Max settings page will name them: you cancel in their account area.
The rebrand means old bookmarks and receipts say “Max”
Receipts, card descriptors and saved links from 2023–2025 may still read Max. It’s the same subscription and the same account, so don’t assume you’re paying for two things.
Annual plans don’t refund the unused months
Cancelling an annual subscription stops the next renewal. The current year runs to term rather than being refunded pro rata.
Frequently asked
Yes. The service was renamed Max in 2023 and back to HBO Max in 2025. Your account, billing and cancellation flow carried over unchanged; older receipts simply show the previous name.
Open the subscription page on the HBO Max site: it names your billing provider. From there, cancel inside that provider’s own account settings; HBO Max can’t cancel a subscription it doesn’t bill.
Downloads stop playing once access ends at the close of your paid period. Anything you’ve watched stays in your history if you resubscribe later.
Yes, that’s the default. Cancelling stops the renewal, and full access continues to the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
You fill in one form with the name, address and email on the account. Submo composes a formal written cancellation notice from those details, addressed to the provider's record, and sends it on your behalf. You get a dated copy for your files. We never sign in to your account and never ask for your password.
The form takes about two minutes. Your notice is reviewed and dispatched by a person on our side — that review is deliberate, because a notice sent to the wrong entity is worse than no notice. Providers then process cancellations on their own timetable, commonly within a few business days.
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. A cancellation notice exercises a right you already have under your agreement, and it creates a dated record that you exercised it. That record is what makes a bank dispute straightforward if billing continues. What the provider does next is the provider's decision.
Send your dated copy of the notice to your bank or card issuer and dispute the charge. A written notice with a date on it is exactly the evidence a chargeback needs, and it is the main practical reason to send one rather than clicking a button with no record.
$19.99 for one cancellation notice, charged once — not a subscription. Each additional provider on the same request is $9.99. If we fail to send your notice, we refund the fee in full.
No. That is the point of a written notice — it works when you've lost the password, lost access to the email, inherited HBO Max from someone else, or simply can't find the cancel button. We identify the account from the name, address and email you give us.
We collect only what the notice needs: your name, postal address and the email on the account. Card details go directly to Stripe and never touch our servers. We don't sell data.
Yes, up to 5 on a single request. Add them with "Add another" on the form and each provider gets its own notice.
